I bought this computer 1 year and 4 months ago from Amazon. The computer seemed to work well until 2 months ago when the computer started slowing down dramatically. I did all the obvious things to increase the speed using software like CCleaner, Norton Security Deluxe and a number of Microsoft tools. I’ve run Norton’s deep cleaner antivirus and Microsoft’s Defender deep cleaner antivirus programs. Just lately I ran Microsoft’s 8.1 refresher program. No change.
I contacted Dell. I used their FAQs,their email service, and talked to 2 service reps. The expert information they gave me came directly from the computer manual and I received no insightful information, only generalities and excuses about why they could not answer my questions. Even though the 2 people I talked to were supposed to help me decide if I needed to get repairs they were only interested in signing me up for a $150.00 work order for a problem they could not identify.
Dell’s website has changed dramatically and no longer gives much technical information about its products. For example, When I bought my first 2 sticks of ddr3 ram, they gave reasons why I had to buy 2 sticks and not just 1 if I was upgrading ram memory.The website also would not allow me to buy just 1 stick. I’m glad they did that. Know you can buy 1 stick. If you are upgrading ram memory with one stick, my computer will not work. Why? Because to upgrade XPS x8700 memory you must always use 2 same-sized dd3 memory sticks.
Finally, I tried to upgrade my Geforce graphics card because I found that it was running as if it was interfaced to a pci express x8 slot on the motherboard. My manual, as well as one of the Dell contacts, guaranteed it is a pci express x16 slot which runs 2 times as fast as the x8. Ithought that a newer card would work faster because it is meant to run with in a cpi x16 slot.. My new card has gddr5 memory and was rated at 2.0 which means it could run even faster than a slot rated at x16. The new card was dumbed down to x8. Dell says its the card (how can that be when gddr5 memory is the latest and can be used in 3,0 rated express slots)?
I contacted EVGA and they said it was the computer because the card can be ‘dumbed’ down by the motherboard. None of the Dell reps ever tried to see if the driver supplying the dedicated pci express slot is apci x8 driver.
I sound like I’m whining and I probably am. If anybody reading this review has any ideas let me know. I do not know what I should do to get my computer up to speed and I don’t know if I can get a PCI express driver to update my dedicated graphics card slot.

Over all I’m pretty happy with this computer.I was a little bit thrown when I realized the power plug was at the top of the back and therefore couldn’t just use the cord I already had since it was too short.I’m unable to get on the floor easily so it was a struggle for me to unplug the old cord and use the one provided by Dell.I also was unable to use my much better keyboard because it didn’t have a usb plug (one of the older ones with the round plug which fits nowhere on here) The Dell keyboard is ok, but it sized differently and there is an adjustment periodhappening, but it does seem to work well, so I’ll just live with it.
The set up was very simple & I’m extremely tech challenged but had no problems. It runs very quietly, is fast and allows me to play games that my old piece of junk wouldn’t even open. There has been one occasion where it said it needed to shut down and it did come back up without me having to do anything except sit there and wait.I have no idea if this was hardware or software related.
I had used easy link in windows 7 ultimate to get everything I wanted to keep off the old machine, but so far I’ve been unable to get it to download to this one.But that may be my lack of understanding.and not the fault of the machine.

I did have one other hardware issue with a transmitter that plugs into a usb port to connect and send information on line.No matter which port I used if it even "saw" it, it refused to actually transmit. This was partially remedied by downing loading the software for it again, but when I tried to transmit again using a different usb port, it again doesn’t work & I must use the one it was plugged into when the software reloaded.I cannot for the life of me figure out which ports are 2.0 and which are 3.0 so I also can’t tell if they are all working properly either.

I chose to wait to install windows 10 and am fumbling my way around with 8*1 trying to give it a fair chance and let 10 work out more bugs before I switch.I may actually like 8.1 !!But that has nothing to do with the actual computer.

So I’m glad I bought this in spite of some of the negative reviews that kept me changing my mind for months.I’d do it again and I’d recommend it to my friends.

The price is right. I waited until Black Friday deals came out to buy a computer. This computer was more powerful than any of the Black Friday deals out there, and the regular price was just as good as any of those deals. It is fast and quiet, and has more disk space than I know what to do with. As a bonus, it is pretty as well.

Evidently, when you buy computers now, they come pre-loaded and ready to run. Just plug it in and turn it on. Everything is already installed. You just enter your information to make it yours, and let a few updates automatically install. You will not receive any disks for installation or recovery. You will need to use the Dell Backup And Recovery program (already installed) to make your own recovery disk or thumb drive. With a great price like this, I’m happy to make my own recovery disk.
